Ordering Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates

Yes. All certificates are full and are suitable for official purposes.

A short birth certificate only gives the child’s full name, sex, date and place of birth. It does not give the name and particulars of the mother or father.

In the UK, as long as you have all the details on the order form and these details are accurate, a certificate can be issued.

I'm afraid that for the majority of certificates in the UK, time of birth is not usually recorded, and as such we cannot guarantee that this information will be available. Where the information may be available is on the small 'baby card' which may have been issued by the staff at the Maternity Ward stating the baby's weight, time of birth etc.

Yes. You can order multiple copies of the same certificate using the 'number of copies' control on the order form, and can add multiple different certificates to the same order using the 'add another certificate' buttons on the order review page.

Certificate Content

A full birth certificate normally contains the following:

  1. When & where born
  2. Name
  3. Sex
  4. Name & surname of father
  5. Name, surname and maiden name of mother
  6. Occupation of father
  7. Signature, description and residence of informant
  8. When registered
  9. Signature of registrar
  10. Name entered after registration

A marriage certificate contains the following:

  1. When, where and how married
  2. Name(s) and Surname in Full
  3. Occupation
  4. Marital Status
  5. Usual Residence
  6. Father's Name(s)Surname and Occupation
  7. Mother's Names(s) Surname(s) and Maiden Surname
  8. Officiating Minister or Registrar with Designation and Witnesses with Addresses

The contents of a full/ long form death certificate is as follows:

  1. When & where died
  2. Name & surname
  3. Sex
  4. Age
  5. Occupation
  6. Cause of death
  7. Signature, description & residence of informant
  8. When registered
  9. Signature of registrar

This means if a certificate is presented on it’s own, it doesn’t prove you are the person on the certificate.

England and Wales do not use raised seals, but Scotland do use raised seals.

What you have received is the correct format. The sample image of the Birth Certificate on our website is from 1944.

If the original entry into the Registers Book is difficult to read, then any certified copies which are taken from the original will also be difficult to read. It's not an error on our part, but on the person who recorded the birth.

Adoption

All certificates we supply are full/long form, certified and are suitable for legal purposes. Regarding an Adoption Certificate, you can order and make payment online. Please enter 'ADOPTION' next to your name on the Birth Order form, ensuring you provide the person's adopted name, and the details of the adoptive parents.

Divorce Certificate or Decree Absolute

Unfortunately, we don't currently provide services relating to divorces. Divorce certification is something we hope to offer as a service in the future, but we regret to inform you that we do not currently provide the service.

Costs

All certificates we supply are full/long form, certified and are suitable for official purposes.

Apostilles

An Apostille is simply a certificate of authenticity. An Apostille is a certificate that is attached to an official legal document to verify that the signatory on your document is genuine and person who signed your document is a recognised and authorised person of the organisation that issued the document. Each Apostille is dated, given a unique reference number and registered.

An Apostille enables documents issued in the United Kingdom to be used overseas (in countries which participate in the Hague Convention). When you present a legal document in a foreign country, it is often difficult to determine whether the document is genuine and legal. A simple certificate of authenticity, called an ‘Apostille’ is used to do this. These countries validate the document (for example, a birth certificate) on the basis of the Apostille, rather than the document itself. No further evidence or proof is needed when an Apostille is produced.

Here is a list of countries in the Hague Convention, which will accept an Apostille Certificate as full legalisation of a document.

Refunds

Your refund will be issued back to the payment card you used when placing your order.

If you do not know all the details for your certificate, this is not a problem. We will do our best with the information you have to locate the record and will confirm the details with you if we are unsure. If you decide not to proceed, we will issue you a full refund.

Cancelling Your Order

There is no facility to cancel or amend an order once it has been placed. Orders feed directly into our production process, leaving us unable to stop the system. We apologise for the inconvenience.

If the event was registered with a British overseas authority, then we should be able to obtain it.

Miscellaneous

It is policy when an application has been made for a Birth Certificate registered within the last fifty years, that full details are supplied, that is the parents' names and the date of birth.

Unfortunately we are unable to obtain certificates in England and Wales before 1837 (when civil registration began). You may want to try looking at the Parish records. Depending of which County the individual associated themselves with, the Council hold County Archives, and this is where Parish records are kept.

We can only start researching and processing a request once we have received payment. Once your order arrives here we will look into the records, as specific information is required to order a certificate. If at this early stage we are unable to locate a record using the information you have provided, we will email you.
